Faculty of Human Sciences Public Lecture - Memory: The Thread of Life

Wednesday 28th November 2012 at 6pm
Professor Suparna Rajaram - Professor of Psychology, Stony Brook University, New York
Professor Suparna Rajaram, named in 2009 as a "Face and Mind of Psychological Science" by the Association for Psychological Science (USA), is one of the world's leading memory scientists. For over two decades she has worked to understand human memory: in the laboratory, in educational settings, and in ageing. She is famous for her research on "remembering" vs "knowing", on "explicit" vs "implicit" memory, and on amnesia. She is now at the forefront of a new international effort to understand how memory operates in a social context: when and how we remember with our family, friends, and colleagues.
Professor Rajaram's research is supported by prestigious grants from the National Institutes of Mental Health and she has been honoured with Fellowships of the Association for Psychological Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Psychological Association. She has published more than 50 scientific articles and book chapters. Professor Rajaram is a highly sought after teacher, mentor and speaker. For instance, in 2001 she established the Women in Cognitive Science initiative to mentor and support young women scientists, funded by the National Science Foundation (USA). In 2010 she was invited by the largest psychological society in the world, the American Psychological Association, to give a Plenary Address on social influences on memory.
In this Public Lecture, Professor Rajaram will discuss the many important ways in which memory and memories shape us across our lives: as students learning in the classroom; as adults working, living and loving; if we experience brain damage which selectively impairs some forms of memory; and as we age and our memories start to decline. She will tell us about her own life as a memory researcher, as well as the ideas, methods and findings that have led her to focus on the costs and benefits of people remembering together.
The lecture will be introduced and chaired by Lynne Malcolm, the award winning Producer and Presenter of the program "All in the Mind" on ABC Radio National, and Executive Producer of ABC Radio National's Science Unit.
