Nasal cycle as a non-invasive window to the brain: The interplay between cognitive functions and differential nostril airflow.

    Airflow through the nasal passages is asymmetric. The dominant nostril alternates along a cycle termed the Nasal Cycle (NC). It was previously hypothesized that NC is connected with concomitant changes in brain hemisphere activation and function. In this talk I will overview my results characterizing the dynamics of the Nasal Cycle. Diurnal patterns of NC were measured using a novel device, allowing 24-hour continuous recording of airflow in each nostril. In addition, I tested the hypothesis that NC is causally related to hemispheric functional brain asymmetry, also affected by brain damage (tested in post stroke patients). Novel results showing ipsi-lateral correlation between nostril dominance and brain activity (n=30, p<0.04) will be presented in addition to supporting results in post stroke patients.
