Bilingual development in children with language and communication disorders from migrant families. (CLaS-CCD Research Colloquium Series)

    Two key questions emerge from research on bilingual children with language and communication disorders (LCD): 1) Do children with LCDs have the capacity to become bilingual? and 2) How can the linguistic profiles of bilingual children with LCDs be differentiated from bilingual children with typical development (TD)? In this talk, research from my lab aimed at addressing these two questions will be presented, with an emphasis on our most recent research. Research participants are sequential bilingual children from migrant families acquiring English as an L2 with diverse L1 backgrounds. Bilingual children with TD and bilingual children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD; formerly SLI) and with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) participated in the studies. The clinical and theoretical implications of the research will be discussed.
