Profile

Broadly, my research is on understanding developmental language and cognition in children who are typically and atypically developing. I use both neuroimaging and psychological tests to do this.

In my PhD at CCD at Macquarie, I studied the relationship between auditory processing and language ability in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Together with Dr Jon Brock and Prof Genevieve McArthur, I used MEG and behavioural tests (language, clinical etc) to understand how children with and without ASD discriminate speech and nonspeech sounds, or social and nonsocial sounds. I also linked cortical responses (M50, M100, mismatch negativity, acoustic complex change) to behavioural and language patterns in children with and without ASD, as well as in neurotypical adults.

I then moved to the UK to take up a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship at Aston Brain Centre, where I developed a receptive language mapping paradigm to understand the N400m developmental trajectory, and for pre-surgical language mapping in epilepsy.

Prior to academia, I worked as a specialist psychologist, with children with learning difficulties (dyslexia, ADHD, autism). I graduated from the University of Hull with a BSc Psychology (first class honours, British Psychological Society accredited).

I currently work as a Lecturer in Psychology at the Graduate School of Education at the University of Bristol.
