Profile

The focus of my research is on the neural basis of vision, dealing specifically with the question of how segregated and independent processing of different visual features can lead to unified perception. For example, when viewing a red Ferrari speeding across our visual field, one effortlessly attributes motion and colour to this object rather than perceiving these features disjointed and incoherent. Our ability to perform this operation reliably is remarkable when one considers that the brain processes motion and colour in separate visual pathways. My work applies design principles from the traditional field of visual psychophysics to functional brain imaging experiments, to examine the neurobiological mechanism underlying the ‘binding’ of visual features. I have also applied these methods to examine clinical cohorts where binding might fail, such as in patients with psychosis who experience fragmented visual perception. Since the field of visual neuroscience is rapidly laying foundation for widespread clinical application, my research also offers a rigorous mechanistic approach for understanding other cognitive processes in the healthy and diseased brain.
