Research on Hearing, Audition and Cognition

As an extension to the core research programs of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders (CCD), we have an number of researchers who are interested in the relationship between cognitive processes and the way in which the human brain processes auditory information, as associated with hearing loss, hearing restoration and cognitive disorders. Macquarie University staff and students in the CCD, and all CCD laboratory facilities, are located in the Australian Hearing Hub.

The Australian Hearing Hub is a unique, world-class facility purpose-designed to facilitate collaborative research and teaching in hearing and related speech and language disorders. One in six Australians suffer from hearing loss and thus the Australian Hearing Hub has enormous potential to advance research of benefit to the Australian community, and to people with hearing disorders in other countries. At the Australian Hearing Hub, CCD researchers with expertise in language, reading and other areas of cognitive science are brought together with Macquarie University's clinical research and professional training teams in audiology and speech-language pathology. They are joined by a major government research organisation, Australian Hearing, incorporating the National Acoustic Laboratories; and with implantation teams from Australia's leading hearing technology company Cochlear Limited and the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre, as well as major not-for-profit organisations including The Shepherd Centre and the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children. The Australian Hearing Hub is located near to the global headquarters of Cochlear Limited, which will further enhance collaborations between CCD researchers at Macquarie University, and the Australian Hearing Hub tenants, making this facility a true global leader for hearing and speech related disorders.
